The Public Advocate is a non-voting member of the New York City Council who can introduce and support new laws. They act as a watchdog for city government by overseeing agencies, investigating complaints about city services, and suggesting ways to improve those services. The Public Advocate helps choose the director of the Independent Budget Office and appoints members to various boards and commissions, including the New York City Planning Commission. They also serve as chair of the Commission on Public Information and Communication, which focuses on making city information more accessible and improving how it is shared.
