The First Deputy Mayor coordinates the activities of other Deputy Mayors, senior staff, and entities that report directly to the Mayor, promoting collaboration and consistency in policies and administration. Additionally, the First Deputy Mayor liaises with community leaders and stakeholders, maintaining communication with various commissions and authorities such as the Civil Service Commission, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. They act on behalf of the Mayor in all duties and assume executive responsibilities in the Mayor’s absence.
